Case Studies in Voice Rehabilitation: A Peek into the Voice Clinic

Tuesday 23rd July 2024, 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM (London Time)

Singing teachers are on the front lines of vocal health. Over the course of a career, most singing teachers will experience a voice disorder themselves, or will have students who do. Many singing teachers are familiar with benign vocal fold lesions such as vocal fold nodules or polyps, but may have less experience with the full gamut of voice problems. Having a working understanding of the types of voice disorders, what causes them, how they are diagnosed, and how they are treated is a critical component of the singing teacher’s knowledge base.

In this course, led by a speech-language pathologist who is also an experienced singer and singing teacher, participants will learn about a broad span of voice disorders through case-studies. Each case will feature a different type of voice problem, and will proceed from reviewing the case history, to watching videos of stroboscopy exams, and then working through the course of treatment.

Cases will include:

  • Structural voice disorders: nodules, polyps, and beyond
  • Neurogenic voice problems
  • Inflammatory causes of voice problems
  • Vocal fold cancer
  • Muscle tension dysphonia
