Jason K. Martin teaches Acting, Voice, and Speech at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). He is an Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework® and is deeply indebted to Knight-Thompson Speech work. He received his MFA in Acting from CSU, Long Beach and his BA from Duke.
Jason has coached dialect, voice, and text for over 30 shows in Chicago at theatres such as A Red Orchid, Raven, Haven, Oak Park Festival Theatre, Lifeline, and Tony award-winning theatres Lookingglass and Steppenwolf. At UIC, he has worked on nearly 30 plays with directors such as Marti Lyons, Derrick Sanders, Tasia Jones, Eddie Torres, and Yasen Peyankov. He maintains a small clientele of actors and professionals.
He has written a book review for the Voice and Speech Review, has conducted an IRB-approved study on AI and vocal prosody, and presented two papers on AI and voice work at the 2025 Voice and Speech Trainers Association (VASTA) conference. In 2026, he was a panellist for Voice Connections 2026: “The Future of Voice Work and AI.” He presented initial findings from his prosody study at the 2026 VASTA conference.

Join James Martin as he presents his findings from a pedagogical research study which explored how AI voice cloning technology might be used to assist, motivate, and complement the work of student actors. Specifically, the ability of the AI clones to reveal rhetorically dense and/or long text is superior to a majority of his students, based on his assessment of their first efforts at speaking dense text.
