Sten Ternström is Professor of Music Acoustics and Voice Acoustics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, at the department of Speech, Music and Hearing which was founded in 1951 by Gunnar Fant. Sten’s research interests center on technical aspects of human voice, in speech and in singing, such as implementing measurements and simulations of voice-related sounds and signals. Lately, his primary research topic has been how to account for the great variability in voices, when assessing effects of interventions, by applying voice mapping to combinations of physical metrics.
Sten Ternström also likes to stay current with acoustics and sound processing for music and audio. His PhD thesis, presented in 1989 and supervised by Johan Sundberg, was on the acoustics of choir singing, a topic that he revisits every now and then. Collaborations on singing together and on virtual acoustics for choir singing are in progress at this writing. Sten has sung in chamber choirs and small groups for most of his life, and he occasionally arranges and composes choral music.

The Acoustics of Choir Singing
Sten Ternström
When many people are singing together in a room, a number of phenomena present themselves that beg for a scientific inquiry. What can knowledge of acoustics do to help the singer and the conductor?
