Meet Our Students: Jennifer Maslin

Saturday 9th December 2023

Jennifer Maslin is a singer, violinist and singing teacher based in Kent (UK) who has been enrolled on our MA Voice Pedagogy course since April. She splits her time between performing, teaching and running residential courses for adult performers.

Trained classically, Jennifer loves choral singing, as well as her other great passion – jazz. She is a teacher with www.singjazzinternational.com and performs as a soloist and with various ensembles across the southeast of the UK. Feeding her performance experience into her teaching is very important to her, as well as providing a safe, encouraging space for her students to develop their own voices and shine.

Jennifer has a BA Hons (First Class), PGCE and EFP in Estill Voice Training and also completed the ‘Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy: The ‘What, Why and How’ of Vocal Pedagogy’ with Kerrie Obert earlier this year, attaining a Merit. She is excited to delve deeper into voice pedagogy through her chosen Master’s pathway, after being initially attracted to the Voice Study Centre by its online short courses (“a lifeline during the pandemic”) and the “buzz” and “community” it fosters.

Although only a little way into her MA journey, Jennifer feels elated to be stretching her brain through reading, learning and writing again. “I’m so glad I went for it. It has already challenged, inspired and taught me so much more about myself – and I’m only seven months in,” she adds, while also paying tribute to her tutor, Mel Toy, for pushing her to achieve her very best standards.

Jennifer looks forward to continuing her research into teacher/student personality types and their positive impacts within the voice studio – as well as furthering her understanding of anatomy and teaching techniques. Her first assignment concerned teacher personality type (specifically the Highly Sensitive Person – HSP) and its effect on teacher wellbeing and practice, and she hopes to submit the paper to a journal in the future after being told that she should consider publishing the research.

The future is looking bright – Jennifer has recently started teaching advanced singing students at a new independent school and is excited to be nurturing young talent using new-found knowledge gained from her studies. She’d also love to record a new jazz album next year and launch it alongside a local jazz night that’s currently in the pipeline! Very, very exciting indeed.
