Games & Gadgets: Building Vocal Skills Through Movement & Play

A two-part practical course with Naomi Lewandoski

What happens when we bring movement, play and everyday objects into the singing studio?

This two-part course explores how movement, sensory feedback and external focus can help singers develop greater awareness, discover new coordinations and build vocal skills without relying on extra effort or overthinking.

This is a practical, hands-on course with plenty of time to move, sing, experiment and play with different possibilities.

Part One: Movement, Alignment, Breath & Airflow

Participants will explore:

  • whole-body movement and vocal coordination;
  • adaptable alignment and dynamic postural balance;
  • the relationship between movement, breathing and sound;
  • resistance and external focus as tools for vocal learning;
  • visual and kinaesthetic feedback for breath awareness; and
  • airflow regulation and the balance between flow and force.

Using tools such as exercise balls, balance equipment, stretchy bands and playful breath and airflow gadgets, participants will explore how different movements and tasks can influence the body, breath and voice.

Part Two: SOVT, Articulation, Resonance & Expression

Participants will explore:

  • a range of semi-occluded vocal tract exercises;
  • the balance between airflow, pressure and vocal-fold vibration;
  • flexible coordination of the tongue, lips and jaw;
  • adaptable vocal-tract shaping;
  • resonance, clarity and vocal colour; and
  • expressive phrasing, musical intention and storytelling.

We will experiment with selected SOVT tools, everyday objects for articulation and resonance, and visual and tactile prompts such as ribbons and contrasting textures. These discoveries will then be taken into phrases and repertoire.

Each activity will be connected to a vocal skill. As no single tool works in the same way for every singer, participants will be encouraged to observe, adapt and discover what is useful for the individual. We will also consider how playful exploration can develop into a skill the singer can retain without the tool.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed primarily for singing teachers and voice practitioners. The ideas can be adapted for singers of different ages, abilities and musical genres, as well as individual lessons, group classes, choirs and community singing settings.

Both sessions will be practical and interactive, with time to explore the activities, play with different possibilities, ask questions and discuss how the ideas might be adapted for individual singers.

Participants will leave with creative and practical ideas, a clearer understanding of how movement and sensory feedback can support vocal learning, and strategies for connecting exploration with phrases and repertoire.
