Deonté L. Warren (he/they) is Assistant Professor of Practice in Musical Theatre Voice at Texas State University, where they teach applied voice and vocal technique while mentoring emerging musical theatre artists. A Broadway performer turned educator, Deonté's professional performance credits include Disney's Aladdin, Sister Act, and Dreamgirls, alongside extensive regional theatre, national touring, and international performance experience.
Their scholarship sits at the intersection of musical theatre pedagogy, voice science, leadership, and equity. As a doctoral researcher in Educational and Community Leadership, Deonté's research explores how musical theatre education can cultivate more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable learning environments through culturally responsive pedagogy, belonging, and institutional change. They are particularly interested in bridging research and practice by examining evidence-based approaches to vocal pedagogy, performer wellbeing, and educational leadership.
Deonté is a Certified One Voice Coach and is currently leading one of the first longitudinal clinical evaluations of the One Voice Pedagogy in collaboration with medical voice specialists, investigating its impact on vocal health, stamina, and artistic development in collegiate musical theatre singers. They have presented and published on topics including musical theatre vocal pedagogy, race and representation in musical theatre, and inclusive teaching practices.
Alongside this research, Deonté is an advocate for gender-affirming voice care within musical theatre education. Their work explores how voice teachers can integrate evidence-based, affirming pedagogical practices that support transgender and gender-diverse performers while expanding access to healthy, artistically authentic vocal expression.
Committed to interdisciplinary collaboration, Deonté is excited to contribute to the Musical Theatre Research Alliance through practitioner-informed research, cross-sector partnerships, and conversations that advance ethical, evidence-based practice across the musical theatre profession.
