Coaches working with actors, singers or public speakers who want to learn more about emotion, how it impacts our brains, voices and bodies, and how they can harness it for performance.

This course will introduce you to theories of emotion and the connections between the brain, body, and voice. We will then discuss how to work effectively with emotions when coaching speakers or singers, considering the physical and mental demands.

Syllabus

Session 1: Emotion in the Brain and Body

Understand the science behind emotional responses and how they affect vocal expression. Discover the intricate processes that occur in the brain and body when emotions are triggered and how these processes influence the voice

We will cover:

  • An overview of the different theories of emotion from historical perspectives to now
  • What even is emotion?: A discussion of the difference between feeling, emotion, affect, and mood
  • What does research suggest happens in the brain when we experience emotions?
  • What is the impact on our bodies when we experience emotion?
  • Group discussion – reflect on your own experience of emotion and join the debate
  • Task – a small task will be set to prepare for the following day
Session 2: Emotion in the Voice and Listener

Learn how emotions are conveyed through the voice and perceived by listeners. Explore the nuances of vocal expression and how subtle changes can convey a wide range of emotions

We will cover:

  • Encoding of emotion (how we signal emotion through our voice use)
  • Decoding of emotion (how we interpret emotion as listeners)
  • How much is voluntary or involuntary?
  • In-session task: we will listen to some recordings of emotional voice use in speech and singing and discuss them as a group
  • Task: a small task will be set to prepare for the following day
Session 3: Harnessing Emotional Expression for Performance

Gain strategies to help your acting or singing students channel their emotions effectively for powerful performances. Learn techniques to guide your students in using their emotions to enhance their performances and connect with their audience on a deeper level

We will cover:

  • Building on learning from the first two sessions, how can we use this information to support actors, public speakers and singers in vocal emotional expression?
  • What can we use in the teaching room?
  • Discussion: how do you teach emotional expression? How can you implement what you have learned?
  • Task: a small task will be set to prepare for the following day
Session 4: Working Ethically and Safely with Emotion

Gain insights into ethical practices and safety measures when dealing with emotional expression in voice teaching. Understand the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for your students to explore and express their emotions, as well as protecting the voice.

We will cover:

  • How can you protect the performer’s wellbeing when working with emotion?
  • How can you protect the performer’s voice when working with emotion?
  • How can you protect yourself as a coach?
  • What are our professional boundaries?
  • Discussion: Reflecting on your own emotional performance scenarios and your experience of students’ experiences. What have you learned from your own experiences and what you have learned on this course?
Assessment

Submit a short piece of reflective writing (approximately 500 words) on what you have learned to Louisa in order to attain your certificate in coaching emotional vocal expression.
