This course covers essential topics such as articulatory, acoustic, and auditory phonetics, the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), and ethical approaches to accent and dialect coaching. By the end of this course, you'll be equipped with the knowledge and practical skills to start to bring phonetics and accent coaching into your coaching and provide more comprehensive support to your clients.

For those looking to delve deeper into accent coaching, we also offer an advanced course. This course covers many additional considerations such as working with EAL (English as an Additional Language) learners and coaching neurodiverse performers, learning from different experts from across the related fields.

Introduction to Articulatory Phonetics

  • Kick off the course with an introduction to articulatory phonetics.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the anatomy of the vocal tract and its role in sound production.
  • Learn how to label the manner of articulation and discover its significance in accent and dialect work.

Introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet

  • Explore the history and application of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).
  • Building on your knowledge of articulatory phonetics, learn how the IPA categorises and describes sounds.
  • Discover practical ways to incorporate the IPA into your coaching sessions.

Introduction to Auditory Phonetics

  • Dive into auditory phonetics and learn how the ear receives, and the brain interprets sound.
  • Consider practical applications of this knowledge in your coaching.
  • Gain insights into how adults acquire language skills.

Introduction to Acoustic Phonetics

  • Understand the principles of acoustic phonetics, including how sound travels and resonance is produced within the body.
  • Learn how the vocal tract adjusts to create tonal sounds and pitch.
  • Discover how this knowledge can be applied in accent and dialect coaching.

Approaches to Teaching Accents & Dialects

  • Explore various methods for teaching accents and dialects, including intuitive approaches that do not rely on the IPA.
  • Discuss effective strategies for practise based on research and learn how to encourage intuitive learning in your coaching sessions.

Working Ethically with Accents & Dialects

  • Address the ethical considerations in accent and dialect coaching. Discuss how to approach bias and stereotypes, accent softening/reduction, and the boundaries of who you can and should be coaching.
  • Learn how to listen effectively and work ethically in your practice.

Assessment

The course culminates in a short assessment required for ITOL Certification. You will complete a multiple-choice quiz on phonetics and develop a lesson plan demonstrating your understanding of the course content.
