This course is best suited to spoken voice coaches, acting coaches, singing teachers, and other health professionals who work with voice within a professional context, who are new to phonetics and accent/dialect work. This beginner's course is aimed at those who need a foundation knowledge of articulatory, acoustic and auditory phonetics as well as methods of approaching accent/dialect coaching in order to be able to start adding these tools to their teaching.

Course outline

 

This course is best suited to spoken voice coaches, acting coaches, or singing teachers, who are new to phonetics and accent/dialect work. This beginner's course is aimed at those who need a foundation knowledge of articulatory, acoustic and auditory phonetics as well as methods of approaching accent/dialect coaching in order to be able to start adding these tools to their teaching. A separate level two course will be available to those wishing to take a more advanced course or for those who have already taken the level one course.

  • Introduction to the course.
  • Develop knowledge of the anatomy of the vocal tract and how it functions in articulatory production.

Acoustic Phonetics (Louisa Morgan)

  • Understand how sound travels and how resonance is produced within the body.
  • Learn How the vocal tract adjusts to produce tonal sounds and pitch.

Auditory Phonetics (Louisa Morgan)

  • Learn how the ear receives sound.
  • Understand how the brain interprets sound.
  • Introduction to how we acquire language skills as adults.

Approaches to Teaching Accent & dialects I (Louisa Morgan)

  • Understand alternative methods of accent teaching without IPA.

Linguistics & Phonology (Joseph Griffiths-Bloor)

  • Understand descriptions and categorisation of sounds.
  • Understand how we use prosody to communicate.
  • Understand the International Phonetic Alphabet and how to use it.

Approaches to Teaching Accent & dialects II (Joseph Griffiths-Bloor)

  • Understand how to adapt IPA to various ages and needs.

  • How to interpret and transcribe using IPA.

Decolonised Listening & Intelligibility (Joseph Griffiths-Bloor)

  • Gain a basic understanding of the ethical and practical challenges surrounding accent training.
  • Understand stereotyping as a tool and where the boundaries lie.

Accent/dialects & Audience (Joseph Griffiths-Bloor)

  • Understand how to navigate the balance between authenticity and audience perception.
  • Consider how to work with directors and their perception of accent.

Assessment

The course will culminate in an accent assessment that must be completed to receive the ITOL Certification.

For the assessment you will complete a multiple-choice quiz on phonetics, as well as create a devised lesson plan demonstrating your understanding of the course content.
