Work Towards PhD by Publication

If you are a VSC Independent Researcher of the Voice Study Centre, you may want to submit your publications to a university for a PhD by publication award. Here is a list of the awards currently available:

University of Essex

  • Eligibility & Requirements: Be a graduate of another University with at least five year’s standing, normally holding a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, and evidence of substantial professional work experience, and have published work of a nature and depth consistent with the doctoral level research and/or practice. In all cases, a written critical analysis (between 7,000 – 10,000 words) should accompany the published work (or Practice as Research submission). The critical analysis should provide an introduction to your publications, demonstrating the coherence of the work and contextualising the published work within the discipline. The analysis should also outline the contribution the published work makes to the relevant field(s).

University of Portsmouth

  • Eligibility & Requirements: You'll need to have held an undergraduate or postgraduate degree – awarded either by a UK higher education institute or a recognised non-UK equivalent – for at least 5 years. You'll need to submit the already-published materials – those that you wish to be considered as part of your PhD by publication award – between 6–12 months after registering

University of West London

  • Eligibility & Requirements: You'll need to have held an undergraduate or postgraduate degree – awarded either by a UK higher education institute or a recognised non-UK equivalent – for at least 5 years. You are also required to have at least five years appropriate experience in the relevant field, as well as applicable publications/materials or creative work. These materials will be accompanied by a thesis in the region of 15,000-30,000 words, which outlines the work’s coherence, significance and contribution to knowledge.

  • Eligibility & Requirements: Applicants should normally hold a Masters-level degree in music or an area cognate to their area of research.
