Safe & Beautiful Belting Techniques

In this workshop, participants will learn the difference between traditional and modern styles of belting, what belting is and is not, and will experience numerous innovative techniques to produce and teach belting that are safe, natural, even beautiful, all while protecting the vocal folds from hyperadduction and vocal injury.
Topics will include how to create precise sub-glottal pressure for effortless high M1 (chest voice); resonator shaping for various belting sub styles; exercises to train belting at any volume such as sirens, pressure sounds, calls and nasals; clarifying vocal registers with the latest in high-speed videography research; hacks to thicken and thin vocal folds without changing register; explore 5 different belting substyles and their use in musical theatre and commercial voice styles.
Lisa Popeil
Lisa Popeil has an MFA in Voice, and is a pianist, singing teacher and voice researcher based in Los Angeles. She has studied voice for over 60 years and has taught professionally for 40 years. As a performer, Lisa has performed and recorded with Frank Zappa as well as recording and touring with “Weird Al” Yankovic throughout the US and Canada.
