Sex differences in VOICE!

This two-hour workshop, led by performer, articulatory phoneticist, and voice physiologist, Dr. Richard Lissemore, will examine in detail the role that biological sex plays in the perception and pedagogy of singing voices. We'll consider how parameters such as anatomy, physiology, articulation, resonance, and radiated acoustics influence the perceptions and pedagogical decision-making of singing teachers.

Seeking to connect the dots between well-worn perceptual concepts (i.e., chest voice, head voice, mix, belt, and legit voice) and scientific facts and theories, we'll also consider how gender fluidity and hormone therapy potentially influence laryngeal tissue, voice physiology, and perception. By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained valuable new information to apply to their own singing and teaching and will be able to delineate singing voice sex differences supported by myth from those supported by science.

Dr Richard Lissemore

Dr. Richard Lissemore is a well-known performer, educator, and researcher of the singing voice. Educated at two of America’s finest conservatories, he holds an Artist Diploma from the Juilliard Opera Center and a Master of Music from Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. Additionally, he is a Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude graduate of Rutgers University with a degree in microbiology and music.

Voice pedagogy has advanced significantly in the last decades in relation to knowledge of the vocal apparatus (anatomy and mechanics), acoustics, and performance psychology (to name just a few subfields) – this is a wonderful thing! Nonetheless, musicianship and the foundations of music theory are still relevant to the teaching and coaching of singers and this course aims to empower voice teachers and coaches with skills to support the fundamental musicianship development of their students.
