“Too Much, Too Little, Just Right!” - The Balancing Act Model

Tuesday 28th July 2026, 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM (London Time)

£30 - UK £30 - International

The Balancing Act Model encourages singers to explore the extremes of singing, and from those extremes, establish their most efficient (balanced) voice and performance techniques. The extremes are identified as hyper (too much) and hypo (too little) while the vast middle ground is identified as balanced (just right). The Model can be used systematically to encompass the entire act of singing, or randomly to isolate a particular aspect of singing.

Take posture, for example. If you over-elevate your sternum and ribcage, pull back your shoulders as far as you can,  and pull in your chin, you’ll be in hyper posture. Great for military discipline but not so great if you want to look confident and in control. Hypo posture, by contrast, requires you to collapse your ribcage, roll your shoulders forward, and jut out your head like a turtle. Your best postural stance is somewhere in between these two extremes, balanced and just right for you.

This short course will be hands on (and voices on). Together, we will cover many aspects of the singing process including breathing, phonation, resonation, articulation, and attitude. If you’re involved in music theater or opera, you’ll find the Model to be especially helpful in developing character voices for roles such as Nathan and Adelaide in Guys and Dolls.  If you’re just looking to find out what your body and voice can do, The Balancing Act Model can provide many answers. Bring your adventurous self to the session!
