Author/co-author of One Weird Trick: A User’s Guide to Transgender Voice and The Singing Teacher’s Guide to Transgender Voices and co-founder of The Voice Lab, Inc. Liz Jackson Hearns guides voice teachers through an interactive online training to serve transgender and non-binary students. Topics include cultural responsiveness, considerations for voice range and repertoire, hormone therapy for singers, and techniques for gender-perceived voice.

At the conclusion of this session, you will be able to:

  • Begin supporting gender diverse students with appropriate language and care
  • Navigate repertoire choices with trans/nonbinary students
  • Inform and guide students about aspects of voice transition
  • Demonstrate and teach voice masculinization and feminization techniques

Join Dr Sunny Sandhu for a 2-hour course that introduces participants to the ancient practice of kharaj exercises in the Dhrupad tradition, focusing on the deep and resonant lower octave of the voice. Through guided breathing, slow tonal exploration, and sustained notes, students will learn techniques that strengthen the vocal cords, expand range, and develop clarity and stability in sound production!
