Supporting Trans and Gender Expansive Voices in the Music Classroom
with Dr. Bridget Sweet
Thursday 17th November 2022 5-7pm GMT

The increased visibility of trans and gender expansive students in music classrooms is a beautiful thing.

However, with increased visibility comes the need for increased understanding about voices individually and collectively, as well as literally and figuratively, in the music classroom.

I am a white cisgender, heterosexual female, and I am proud to present this session as an ally to the LGBTQ+ community and to speak from my perspective as a music education researcher of voice.

During this session we will consider terminology surrounding the vocal mechanism, gender identification, sexual identity, and voice change.

Perspectives from trans and gender expansive musicians will be shared via multiple media sources.

We will explore research by prominent scholars in the music education and vocal science fields.

Practical teaching strategies and considerations for repertoire will also be discussed.
