Dr Calvin Peter Baker is a Research Fellow and Lecturer at the University of Auckland, working between Speech Science (School of Psychology) and the School of Music (Voice discipline). He completed a Bachelor of Music in classical voice performance and has first-class honours and master's degrees in the specialisation of studio pedagogy. Calvin conducted his interdisciplinary doctoral research (PhD, Speech Science) at the University of Auckland.
His research explores the links between self-perceptual and instrumental voice analysis and seeks to determine which tools are effective for tracking subtle changes in the singing voice. This work has clinical implications for working with singers with voice complaints, particularly in preventative and rehabilitative care. Calvin collaborates with international industry leaders in voice research and publishes in leading scholarly journals.
As a voice teacher, Calvin is experienced in teaching a wide variety of repertoire across genres. He enjoys working with singers of all ages and backgrounds in secondary and tertiary contexts as well as in his private studio. His voice-pedagogy research explores the connections (or misalignments) between traditional voice pedagogy practice and contemporary understandings of vocal function and acoustics. Calvin is the voice lead within the UoA Swallowing and Voice Research Laboratory (www.swallowandvoice.auckland.ac.nz) and a committee member of the Centre for Brain Research Early Researchers Committee. He also runs a clinic specialising in voice habilitation, where he works with professional and occupational voice users to restore optimal vocal function following a voice complaint.

Picking Up Good Vibrations: Pedagogical and Clinical Voice Analysis!

Dr Calvin Baker
Voice teachers and clinicians strongly rely on auditory perceptual modes of voice evaluation. These are considered the gold standard for assessing voice quality and training effects (e.g., a singer’s progress from lesson to lesson or across voice therapy). Join Dr Calvin Baker as he explores techniques for instrumentally analysing the singing voice. Specific considerations for the challenges of obtaining reliable, robust, and comparable data will be presented, and practical recommendations for recording and analysing the singing voice in pedagogical and clinical contexts will be made.
