James has been a professional soloist, singing teacher, vocal pedagogy lecturer and consultant for over 15 years. He is currently undertaking his PhD and is also the Assistant Editor of, and a contributing author to, the upcoming 4th edition of Singing and Teaching Singing: A Holistic Approach to Classical Voice (Plural Publishing).
He sings regularly with Teatro alla Scala, Milan; Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Deutsche Oper, Berlin; Dutch National Opera; Welsh National Opera and Glyndebourne Festival Opera amongst others. On the concert platform, James has collaborated and recorded with many of today’s greatest conductors and orchestras including the Hallé/Sir Mark Elder, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra/Sir Andrew Davis, London Symphony Orchestra/Valery Gergiev, BBC Symphony and Concert Orchestras/Jiri Belohlavek, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment/Sir Mark Elder and Les Musiciens du Louvre/ Marc Minkowski.
He lectures in voice pedagogy and has run accredited Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses at some of the nation’s leading arts institutions, including Chetham’s School of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the Royal Northern College of Music. He is the principal lecturer of the vocal pedagogy course at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and is the senior visiting vocal consultant for the Mascarade Opera Studio and New Generation Artists Festival in Florence.
Alongside Janice Chapman, he is a co-Director of Classical Voice Training Ltd, and has a thriving teaching studio, Vocal Craft, which offers singing lessons as well as access to the Classical Voice Training archive of lectures and workshops on vocal pedagogy.
