Overview

Welcome to Voice Study Centre’s Voice Professional Certificated course. We offer a series of micro-credentials to develop learning, teaching and boost your CV. This is one of them!

This 8-week lunchtime course takes a deep dive into acting approaches that singing teachers can use to integrate powerful acting techniques into singing lessons. This course is perfect for those who want to help their singers connect deeply with the story behind the song. Gain practical tools and techniques that you can immediately apply in your teaching. 

This course is ideal for singing teachers who may not have a background in acting, or those who need a refresher. While the course is primarily geared towards Musical Theatre, the techniques are applicable to various singing styles.

Week 1: Stanislavski's System

Discover the foundational principles of Stanislavski and how they can transform your approach to teaching singing.

  • An overview of Stanislavski’s methods

  • How have others adapted it?

  • What can we apply to singing teaching?
  • Discussion: what tools could we use?

Week 2: Meisner Technique

Learn how to bring spontaneity and authenticity to your students' performances with Meisner's exercises.

  • An overview of the Meisner Technique
  • How does it help us engage with the song?
  • How have others adapted it?
  • Strengths and limitations of the approach
  • What can we apply to singing teaching?
  • Discussion: what tools could we use?
  • Task: a small task will be set to prepare for next week
Week 3: Michael Chekhov's Techniques

Explore Chekhov's imaginative and physical approaches to acting and how they can enhance vocal expression.

  • An overview of the Michael Chekhov approach
  • How can it help our use of expression?
  • How have others used it?
  • Strengths and limitations of the approach
  • What can we apply to singing teaching?
  • Discussion: what tools could we use?

Week 4: Actioning

Learn how the actioning approach can be applied to lyrics to bring a sense of moment-to-moment immediacy to the performance

  • An overview of the Actioning method
  • Practical exercise: trying it out in a script
  • How can it help with spontaneity?
  • How can it apply to singing?
  • Practical exercise: applying it to song lyrics
  • Discussion: Strengths and limitations. How might you like to use it?

Week 5: Text Analysis

Delve into the lyrics and book of a song to uncover deeper meanings and emotional connections.

  • Lyrics as poetry
  • Articulation

Week 6: Musical Clues

Learn to identify and use musical elements to support storytelling.

  • What can the melody tell us?
  • What can the accompaniment tell us?
  • What can the intro/outro/pauses tell us?
  • How do we use this information to improve our storytelling?
  • Discussion: how might you use this in a lesson/rehearsal?
  • Task: a small task will be set to prepare for next week
Week 7: Body Language

Incorporate gesture and facial expressions to bring songs to life.

  • What do we know about body language and performance?
  • What do we know about facial expression and performance?
  • What tools or techniques can we use to help performers who feel physically stuck?
  • Discussion: reflecting on your own experiences of working with this as a coach
  • Task: a small task will be set to prepare for next week
Week 8: Emotional Connection

An introduction to helping your students connect emotionally with their material.

  • A short introduction to emotion
  • How is this heard in the voice?
  • How can it affect the voice?
  • What can we do to engage with it in our teaching?
  • Discussion: how easy is it to work with emotion in singing teaching?
Assessment:

To receive your certificate, please submit a lesson plan for a 30-minute lesson to a student that you might typically teach. Offer a brief description of the student’s level and their goal as well as a breakdown of what would be included in the lesson. This should all be submitted on one side of A4 and should demonstrate something that you have learned from the course.

Once you have investigated acting methods, you might like to join us for an exploration of emotion in speakers, listeners and how to work ethically and safely with emotion.
