Sterre Maier is a Dutch voice specialist with extensive experience in theatre, education and voice coaching, having taught and directed in South Korea, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, Romania, Bulgaria, Mexico and the UK. In this session, she will look at the challenges faced by EAL speakers when learning accents of English and explore ways to approach coaching in an inclusive way. She will investigate what might be their strengths, how we can overcome obstacles and foster independence in their learning process.
Sterre Maier is a Dutch voice specialist with extensive experience in theatre, education and voice coaching, having taught and directed in South Korea, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, Romania, Bulgaria, Mexico and the UK. She gained a BMus in Musical Theatre in the Netherlands and has an MA in the Practice of Voice and Singing from the Guildford School of Acting. She specialises in voice and identity and has co-presented EAL Accent Coaching research at the VASTA conference in Leeds 2024 and for the BVA Talk Voice series. Sterre is Joint Head of Voice at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London.

This two-hour session with Dr Dann Mitton offers a clear, research-informed overview of what we currently know about cannabis and the singing voice. The session is built around real-world questions voice teachers and singers are asking: Does smoking cannabis dry out the vocal folds? Is vaping safer than smoking?
