Wednesday 7th May 2025, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM (London Time)

Friday 9th May 2025, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM (London Time)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or Coaching (ACT) is an empirically-supported psychotherapy & coaching intervention for a variety of common issues facing student and professional musicians from across the world. Some of these include performance anxiety, perfectionism & self-criticism, procrastination, and work-related stress & burnout. Moreover, ACT has demonstrated efficacy as a performance enhancement method in athletic, academic, occupational, and music performance contexts.

In this introductory three-part course, you’ll learn about the ACT model and how to use specific ACT-related processes to treat many of these musicians’ issues. Specifically, you’ll learn how to detect patterns of psychological inflexibility that contribute to the development & maintenance of these issues, and how to undermine those patterns by strengthening the processes believed to increase psychological flexibility for musicians, which can be applied in music performance and practice settings, or beyond.

Learning together: group singing and choral pedagogy

Dr David Cane

The benefits of group singing are well documented and well known. Singing together can foster a sense of social connection and community as well enhancing wellbeing and mood.  However, group singing is not only a shared cultural and artistic experience, but can also be a powerful site of learning. While many of the developments in voice pedagogy have tended to centre around the one-to-one model of teaching, this course with Dr David Cane explores the pedagogical (and potentially the political) potential of teaching and learning to sing collectively.
