Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or Coaching (ACT) is an empirically-supported psychotherapy & coaching intervention for a variety of common issues facing student and professional musicians from across the world. Some of these include performance anxiety, perfectionism & self-criticism, procrastination, and work-related stress & burnout. Moreover, ACT has demonstrated efficacy as a performance enhancement method in athletic, academic, occupational, and music performance contexts.

In this introductory three-part course, you’ll learn about the ACT model and how to use specific ACT-related processes to treat many of these musicians’ issues. Specifically, you’ll learn how to detect patterns of psychological inflexibility that contribute to the development & maintenance of these issues, and how to undermine those patterns by strengthening the processes believed to increase psychological flexibility for musicians, which can be applied in music performance and practice settings, or beyond.

Elevated vocal effort is one of the most common symptoms reported by patients in the voice clinic, yet its measurement and management remain inconsistent. Vocal effort and vocal fatigue are closely linked, but their interplay remains poorly understood. This research-based presentation will examine how vocal effort relates to voice production and vocal demands, offering empirical insights into its role in perceived vocal fatigue. It will also cover definitions, measurement protocols, and strategies for reducing variability in assessment. Additionally, current research methodologies aimed at improving clinical assessment tools will be discussed to support more reliable and valid measurement of vocal effort and fatigue.
