Artist-Centred Coaching: A Contemporary Style and Genre Toolkit
Thursday 12th June 2025, 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM (London Time)
This masterclass explores stylistic science-based training for contemporary pop singers.
Current industry trends for artists mean that singers are having to be more creative, inventive and versatile than ever before. How do we train artists to develop character with sustainability, style with versatility and longevity within commerciality? As a vocal coach working with artists, we have to learn to think like a vocal producer.
In this practical masterclass, we will explore some of the vocal techniques behind some of the biggest tracks of the last few years, and related exercises that can help singers lean into stylistic features of genre, increase their creative vocabulary and transform their vocal habits into choices. We’ll also explore emotional connection as a gateway to technique.
When working specifically with artists and emerging / developing artists it is important as coaches that we focus on retaining and accentuating what makes them unique, while expanding their range of expressive choices and ensuring that they are prepared for industry demands in terms of vocal health and sustainable techniques. It is important also to differentiate between live and recording, and to understand the specific vocal requirements of each.
The artist-centred coaching approach is aligned with Carl Roger’s model of person-centred coaching, which recognises the human inclination towards self actualisation (Rogers, C.R. 1959). This is relevant to artists, whose creativity, songwriting, vocal approach and visual identity is often constantly evolving. With this approach, the coach recognises, trusts and encourages the artist’s own innate knowledge, experiences and choices.
Working closely with an artist, by understanding their style and genre and where they want to evolve to, you can help them to build their own personal toolkit of vocal effects, registration choices, textures and dynamic pivots to support them in fully expressing themselves creatively and authentically. To do this effectively we need our own toolkit of exercises and approaches that are responsive, relevant and fit for purpose.

The course will cover industry trends, cultural pressures, and economic benefits of contemporary music, and provide tools for integrating new music into vocal education.
