How to Put the Perceptible Breath at a Singer's Disposal

Tuesday 23rd September 2025, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM (London Time)

"To let the breath come, let it go, and wait until it comes back on its own is to perceive the unconscious function of the breath. A movement emerges, a connection to the human wholeness, and the possibility to get to know and experience oneself"

(Ilse Middendorf, The Perceptible Breath; 1990)

In this breath-related workshop specifically designed for the singer and singing teachers, participants will learn exercises based on Prof. Ilse Middendorf's therapeutic breathing method "The Perceptible Breath" (Der Erfahrbare Atem). Also translated as Breathexperience and Middendorf Breath Work, this somatic discipline trains a person’s skills of perception to learn about their individual breath, body and nervous system and how they can regulate it by harnessing their own mental powers.

Workshop participants will be guided to increase conscious contact with the individual rhythm of their breath. The power of the breath and the flexibility of the whole body will be explored and expanded so that the free flow of breath is made accessible to their range of vocal skills and they can enjoy an enhanced creative use of their instrument.

The workshop is interactive and allowing room for questions and discussion about breath-related singing pedagogy. Best to attend in a calm place, wearing comfortable clothes and  having a stool or at least a chair with no armrests in reach.

Music Theory Fundamentals for Voice Pedagogues

Dr David Cane

Voice pedagogy has advanced significantly in the last decades in relation to knowledge of the vocal apparatus (anatomy and mechanics), acoustics, and performance psychology (to name just a few subfields) – this is a wonderful thing! Nonetheless, musicianship and the foundations of music theory are still relevant to the teaching and coaching of singers and this course aims to empower voice teachers and coaches with skills to support the fundamental musicianship development of their students.

Learning together: group singing and choral pedagogy

Dr David Cane

The benefits of group singing are well documented and well known. Singing together can foster a sense of social connection and community as well enhancing wellbeing and mood.  However, group singing is not only a shared cultural and artistic experience, but can also be a powerful site of learning. While many of the developments in voice pedagogy have tended to centre around the one-to-one model of teaching, this course with Dr David Cane explores the pedagogical (and potentially the political) potential of teaching and learning to sing collectively.
