Laban-Malmgren technique as a singing pedagogical tool
Tuesday 25th March 2025, 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM (London Time)
The Laban Malmgren Technique (LMT) is a method used to train actors. The ideas on which the technique is based are a coalescence of ideas derived from the works of Rudolf Laban, William Carpenter, Yat Malmgren, Konstantin Stanislavski and Carl Jung. In this lecture and interactive workshop, we will explore how the Laban-Malmgren technique can be translated and transferred for use in voice pedagogy and specifically, for singing. In order to be a versatile and proficient singer who has the ability to sing expressively, it is important to develop both the technical standard and the musicality of the singer. In what way may the Laban-Malmgren technique be beneficial in voice pedagogy? What do we hear in terms of phonation, phrasing and musical expression when tools from the LMT are used? How does the sensation, awareness and proprioception of the singer change?
In this workshop we will investigate how movements in the three-dimensional planes – linked to different vowel sounds – can affect phonation and resonance. In practical exercises, we will work with the various movement factors; weight, space, time and flow – which together make up the eight different working actions – and explore in what way they may affect singing technique and musical expression. Furthermore, we will look at how LMT's tools; externalized drives, mental factors, inner attitudes, degrees of intensity and shadow moves can affect vocal technique and musical expression.

Creative Articulation
Annie Morrison
Most of us have little idea of HOW we speak, or what to do to make speech more muscular. Join Annie Morrison (creator of the 'Morrison Bone Prop') for this two hour session on Creative Articulation, a holistic and haptic approach to the touchings and feelings of the articulators in the dance of speech. Seeing articulation as a purely mechanical skill is detrimental to an actor's process: it is crucial to understand what language is doing on a biological level.
