Yvonne Gonzales Redman is a Professor of Voice and Pedagogy and Chair of the Voice Area at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a member of the American Academy of Teachers of Singing. She began her musical career as a Vocal Performance major at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. Upon graduation, the Houston native was a winner of both the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and the Houston Grand Opera Eleanor McCollum Award. She was accepted as an apprentice in the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. She spent 18 consecutive seasons there as a main stage soprano with nearly 200 onstage performances as a principal soloist, including 26 live radio and television broadcasts that are still regularly broadcast over Sirius XM radio. Highlights include Zerlina in Don Giovanni (James Levine, conductor); Giannetta in L'Elisir d'Amore (with Luciano Pavarotti for his 30th anniversary gala); Jouvenot in Adrianna Lecouvreur (in Mirella Freni's final performances of this work); and in Parsifal with Placido Domingo.
rofessor Redman teaches a large variety of students majoring in music education and performance. She frequently presents master classes and has adjudicated several classical vocal competitions. She is dedicated to staying current in pedagogy and science of all styles of music and attends and participates regularly in workshops and conferences. She has presented topics related to applied teaching; most notable are: bridging pedagogy between genres, at the 9th Quadrennial International Conference of Voice Teachers in Stockholm, Sweden; managing performance anxiety at the 2020 Texas Music Education Association Conference; using digital tools in the classroom and developing a cross-training curriculum for singers at the 2022 10th Quadrennial International Conference of Voice Teachers in Vienna, Austria and the 57th Biyearly National Association of Teachers of Singing Conference in Chicago. She has also been published in the Journal of Singing (2021, 2024) and in the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Voice Pedagogy (2026).
Her experience rehearsing, performing, and teaching in multiple acoustic spaces has inspired her current research interests related to the impact that musical work environments have upon voicing and hearing. This has resulted in several interdisciplinary research studies with the department of Speech and Hearing Science at Illinois. The results of these studies have been presented at multiple conferences including the Voice Foundation Annual Symposium in Philadelphia, PA and the International Congress of Acoustics. Her study on voice instructor’s working environment was published in the Journal of Voice (2022) and studies on singers’ vocal changes and perceptions in different performance spaces have been published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (2022, 2023, 2025).
