Doubles and Stacks, Reverbs and Effects: Teaching Vocal Production Skills
Tuesday 22nd September 2026, 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM (London Time)
No matter your technical experience or setup, you can record great-sounding vocals!
Vocal production, or the process of recording a voice, is a multifaceted practice requiring a diverse set of skills. It has traditionally been considered the role of the producer in a recording studio, and vocalists can often feel intimidated by learning complex technical skills or prohibited by the cost of recording equipment. However, vocalists have much to gain from learning to produce their own vocals, including intimate knowledge of their vocal tone and technique, deeper listening skills, vocal arranging techniques, and the ability to collaborate remotely with other musicians by recording from home. These benefits are not only advantageous for vocalists’ musical development, but can provide more revenue streams in an increasingly fragmented marketplace for professional voice work.
This course is aimed at voice coaches and vocalists who want to learn to record and shape their vocal tracks, as well as how to teach these skills to voice students. Attendees will learn about the vocal production process, including home recording setup, DAWs and equipment, vocal arranging, mixing, and effects. They will also receive practical experience with mixing using a sample session in BandLab, a popular freeware DAW that is excellent for absolute beginners as well as producers with some experience looking to grow their skills. I hope attendees will leave not only with new abilities and knowledge, but also with the confidence to get started in vocal production with the tools they have at their disposal, whether it’s the best microphones and professional plug-ins or a free DAW and a smart phone.
