Games & Gadgets: Building Vocal Skills Through Movement & Play
How can simple tools such as exercise balls, bubbles, stretchy bands, straws, ribbons and even toilet rolls transform the way singers learn?
This interactive course explores how games, gadgets, movement and play can help build vocal skills by creating greater awareness of how the body coordinates for singing. Drawing on principles from contemporary voice pedagogy and motor learning research, participants will discover how sensory feedback and external focus can create engaging opportunities for vocal learning and encourage efficient and sustainable vocal habits.
Singing is a whole-body activity in which breathing, phonation, resonance and articulation constantly influence one another. Rather than relying solely on verbal instruction, external tasks and playful exploration provide singers with immediate feedback, allowing new coordinations to emerge through experience.
At the heart of this approach is the belief that awareness creates choice, and choice creates change. When singers become more aware of their bodies, breathing patterns and vocal responses, they gain greater flexibility and confidence in how they use their voice.
Through demonstrations and practical examples, participants will explore a range of accessible tools and creative approaches to vocal learning, expression and communication. Emphasising curiosity, experimentation and learner-centred teaching, the course will offer practical and engaging strategies to deepen understanding and support vocal learning.
Suitable for teachers working across a range of genres and ages, these ideas can be adapted for individual lessons, group classes, choirs and community singing settings.
The course aims to inspire new approaches to teaching that help singers develop greater confidence and independence, alongside a lifelong understanding of their voice, its function and possibilities.
